If you are passionate about protecting the flora and fauna of Aotearoa, and connecting to te Taiao then this is the role for you. Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Auckland Council are seeking reliable individuals who will put manaaki into action and take the first step towards a biosecurity career. Kauri dieback disease and Myrtle Rust are serious biosecurity issues that are threatening our ngahere, and this role is an opportunity to help us protect our at-risk forests from the impact of these diseases. In this role, you will be educating visitors who are using mountain biking and walking trails in Te Ngaherehere o Kohukohunui/Hunua Ranges, teaching them the importance of preventing the spread of pests and diseases. As a Kauri-ora Ambassador, you will be an advocate for te oranga o Te Ngaherehere o Kohukohunui (the health of the Hunua Ranges) by providing friendly education and advice to increase awareness of these issues, and the positive action we can all take individually. Kauri-Ora ambassadors are based at bike cleaning stations at key locations within Hunua Ranges and the Waharau Regional parks. You will be scheduled on a roster (with days available from Friday- Monday), which requires working weekends and public holidays, starting from December 2023 until the end of February 2024. All Ambassadors will work in pairs and must be comfortable being outdoors all day, sometimes in remote locations. Key responsibilities: Engaging with people in meaningful conversations, and educating visitors to parks Encouraging best biosecurity practices, such as checking and cleaning mountain bikes, shoes and gear Collecting data and reporting this to the Kauri Dieback Advisor Reporting any issues and non-compliance immediately to the Kauri Dieback Advisor and/ or Duty Ranger Monitoring availability of information material and distributing collateral as needed Attending briefings and training sessions as required The ideal candidate: Can whakapapa to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Has access to a reliable means of transport Has a reliable smartphone Is interested in Aotearoa’s biosecurity and conservation issues Is comfortable pronouncing and using basic te reo Māori Understands and values the use of tikanga and protocols Is an organised and reliable worker Has strong communication and people skills Has an outgoing and engaging personality Can problem solve effectively and make key decisions in a timely manner Can work weekends and public holidays Key details: Entry level role with a focus on developing new skills 32 hours per week for someone who is able to work Friday to Monday (8-hour shifts). Beginning December 2023 ending the last week of February 2024 The hourly rate is based on the living wage of $26/ hour.
