Pou rāhui, Pou tikanga, Pou oranga: Taiohi positions available

Aug 30, 2023

Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki are seeking 2 Taiohi (age 17-26) to be involved in the Pou rāhui, Pou tikanga, Pou oranga research programme.

This programme is an iwi-led, collaborative project bringing together five iwi (Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Paoa, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Hei and Ngāti Rehua Ngāti Wai) that have implemented rāhui or temporary legislative closures for identified species and spaces, in the degraded waters of Tīkapa and Te Moananui-ā-Toi.

The programme will provide training for Taiohi to be grounded in the te ao Māori world view of Tīkapa moana. This will be achieved through the following outcomes:

  • SSI Level 1 Freedive qualification training;
  • Traditional navigation with waka hourua;
  • In-water marine monitoring informed by pūrākau or cultural narratives;
  • Ngā tohu o te ao data collection at identified priority sites in the rohe moana; and
  • Attending a series of wānanga identifying and discussing localised environmental knowledge, local maramataka, localised rāhui species and spaces.

There is a requirement to commit to training and participating with your iwi and mātauranga experts over the next 4 years. As this project revolves around our rāhui, Taiohi will need to be able to commit to travelling to Umupuia as part of the role.

The first wāngana will be on the 11th-14th of September at Piritahi Marae, Waiheke Island. This wānanga will be facilitated by Dr Ramari Stewart as a whale expert, in preparation for whale strandings. This wāngana will lay out Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki specific outcomes, timeframes and expectations.

This is funded training and costs such as equipment and transportation will be covered by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki.

If interested email admin@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz by the 6th of September.
