Survey Information and FAQ

  • Why are iwi members being surveyed?

This survey is being conducted as part of a wider health research project, He Timunga Tai, we are currently undertaking thanks to Health Research Council funding. The purpose of the research project is to:

    • Identify the current health and wellbeing needs of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi members and explore the potential of traditional and cultural practices in addressing these needs.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing health and wellbeing services and programs in meeting the needs of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi members.
    • Develop recommendations for improving health and wellbeing services and programs for Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi members, based on the research findings and community feedback.

Results from this survey will be used alongside data collected later in the year via interviews to meet the above goals. Completing the survey does not require you to provide us with an interview later in the year.

Results from this survey will also help us continue to develop the understanding of our iwi members that we started building with our first wellbeing survey in 2021.

  • What kinds of questions are in the survey?

We have questions about Tikanga and Reo, the environment, education, work, housing, and health & wellbeing.

  • Who can complete the survey?

All registered Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki members aged 18 or older are eligible to complete this survey.

You will need a unique survey code in order to complete the survey, which we are providing via email and postal mail. If you have not received a unique code and would like to complete the survey, please contact survey@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz or use the “Request more information” form at the bottom of this page.

  • Do I have to participate?

No. This survey is voluntary, but we need as many people as possible to take part so that we can engage with our iwi members and continue to build our understanding about the health and wellbeing of our members.

  • How long will it take?

The survey should take around 15-20 minutes.

  • What happens to the information I provide, what about my privacy?

We are not collecting names or information that will identify you. In a separate communication you will be provided with a unique survey code which links you to our tribal register.

We are asking you to record this code in the survey so we can validate that your response came from a registered member of Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki.

These codes are being distributed via email and postal mail, depending on the contact details we have for you. If you do not receive one, please contact survey@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz to receive one, or alternatively use the "Request More Information" form at the bottom of this page.

The code may also be used to link your response to basic details held in the tribal register (e.g. age), to assist with analysis of the results. By default, we will not connect your response to your name or any identifying contact details.

During the survey you will be asked if you would like to be contacted about the wider research project that this survey is a part of. If you agree to being contacted, your code may be used to look up your name and contact details in the register so that we can contact you. These details will not be stored with the survey data or connected to any analysis of the results in any way.

Your answers to the survey questions will be kept confidential by Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki, with restricted access only for staff directly involved with this project. Your express permission will be requested prior to any outside party involvement, e.g. health advisors/practitioners.

We have used the SurveyMonkey platform to build our survey and collect the data. The SurveyMonkey Inc. privacy notice can be viewed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/legal/privacy/

Before being extracted and analysed by the team at Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki, the survey data is stored in the United States and is not subject to New Zealand law. No information stored in the Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki tribal register will be linked to your response until after the survey data has been extracted from the SurveyMonkey servers.
