Maraetai 3B2 Whenua Trustee Elections 

Do you want to be involved in the growth and development of our beautiful Umupuia Marae? 

 

The Maraetai 3B2 Whenua Trust, which manages the marae, is currently made up of 5 remaining trustees and the Trust is seeking 4 or more new nominees. 

 

Once established the trustees will work together to develop its operating charter and policies. These trustee roles are voluntary i.e. unpaid. 

 

All uri of our tūpuna Te Whatatau rāua ko Te Raukohekohe are eligible to be nominated, as long as they are registered iwi members, and 20+ years old. 

 

For these governance positions skill sets being sought are in the areas of: 

  • Ngāi Tai reo and tikanga 
  • Administration 
  • Finance 
  • Health and Safety 
  • Audit and Risk 
  • Marae Management 
  • IT and Communications 

 

Appointed Trustees are expected to have sufficient capacity and capability to attend the scheduled hui, and actively contribute to the work of the trust. 


Please note, you don’t have to be a trustee to have an active role at the marae e.g. paepae, ringawera etc. 


Nominations:


Please nominate your trustee via email to marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz by 5pm Thursday 24th August. Self-nominations are also welcome. 

 

Nominees will be contacted by marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz to provide a brief bio and photo, for collation and distribution to iwi members via email after 24th August. 


Voting:


Voting for these candidates will then take place in person at Umupuia Marae on Sunday 27th August, from 2pm to 3pm. 

 

If you cannot attend in person, you may officially register a proxy to cast your vote on your behalf, by emailing the full name and contact details of your proxy to marae@ngaitaitamaki.iwi.nz. Your proxy must be a registered iwi member, and must attend in person to place your vote in the ballot box. There is no online voting option.

Te Whakakitenga Representatives

Umupuia Marae is registered as one of the 68 Te Whakakitenga marae supported by Waikato-Tainui. Being part of this roopu provides cover for insurance, marae infrastructure and utilities and other support throughout the year. 

 

We are seeking nominations for TWO representatives plus ONE alternate to represent us at regular Te Whakakitenga hui on our behalf. 

 

These elected members hold their terms on Te Whakakitenga for 3 years and must be registered Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki iwi members, as well as being registered with Waikato-Tainui, listing Umupuia as one of their marae. 

 

As per Te Whakakitenga rules, to be eligible to vote for your preferred representatives you must also be registered with Waikato Tainui, listing Umupuia as one of your marae, and be 18+. If you are not yet registered under Waikato-Tainui, you can do so here: https://waikatotainui.com/register/ Please note, a new registration request may or may not be processed in time to vote in this year's election.

Roles and Responsibilities of Te Whakakitenga Members: 

 

  • Elected Members of Te Whakakitenga must represent the interests of their marae in all decisions made by Te Whakakitenga. Decisions are determined by votes and each marae is entitled to one vote. 
  • Representatives are directly accountable to their own marae and have a ‘collective responsibility’ to all marae. 
  • Members are expected to make themselves available to attend and participate in meetings, contribute the time necessary to study and understand the papers provided, apply good analytical skills, objectivity, and judgement, and ask questions that go to the fundamental core of the issue. 

 

Important dates as provided by Te Whakakitenga: 

 

  • 3 September 2023 - Nominations for Te Whakakitenga officer, Te Arataura, and committee positions closes. Accordingly, if you want to nominate your Elected Member/s for any of these positions, you will need to have completed your Marae elections by this date. 
  • 6 September 2023 - Closing date for receipt of nominee profiles. 
  • 16 September 2023 - Briefing for the 2023-2026 term for new and returning members. 
  • 30 September 2023 - Triennial Special Meeting.



A representative from legal firm McCaw Lewis will be present on Sunday 27th August to observe the voting process and count the votes.
