Te Rau o Tai
Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Reo me ngā Tikanga
Te Rau o Tai Strategy
Guiding all of our Reo and Tikanga mahi, Te Rau o Tai is a living strategy made up of three pillars: Tapuwae Ariki (past legacy), Tapuwae o Nuku (present legacy), and Tapuwae o Tai (future legacy).
Each pillar has a set of objectives, actions, and strategic goals the inform everything we do in regards to our Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Reo me ngā Tikanga, pūrakau, whakapapa, and sharing of knowledge.
We will continue to update this page with more details about the strategy and the mahi we’re doing to deliver on its goals. For now, read on for more information about our wānanga and online courses!
Te Rau o Tai Wānanga
Running since 2021, our Te Rau o Tai Wānanga series has provided hundreds of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whānau with a safe and welcoming space to learn and develop their Reo me ngā tikanga.
Each year we aim to hold 3-4 Te Rau o Tai Wānanga, which are usually held at Umupuia Marae and are open to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whānau with all levels of comfort in Te Reo Māori. So whether you're a regular at our wānanga or you haven't attended a single one yet, there will always be something for you.
Alongside developing your Reo Māori, our wānanga also provide a range of other activites like connecting with your whenua through haerenga to sites of significance and engaging with other parts of Te Ao Māori such as Matariki through preparing for and conducting hautapu. These kaupapa change from wānanga to wānanga, so keep an eye on them all to see what's being offered.
If you're still early on in your journey of connecting with your Reo or even with your Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whakapapa, these wānanga are an excellent and safe way to do this (in fact, if you haven't visited your marae yet, attending a wānanga is an ideal way to do so for the first time). We hope to keep seeing new faces at every wānanga!
Our next wānanga will be held over Matariki (June 19th - 21st 2025)
Save the date for now and keep an eye out for the registration form.
We'll keep this section updated with the links to upcoming wānanga as that information becomes available, so keep checking back here throughout the year and refer to the dates at the bottom of this page for tentative times of when the next wānanga should be held.
Te Rau o Tai Online Courses
In 2024 we launched a series of online courses which are designed to support the learning of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki whānau throughout the year, weaving between our Te Rau o Tai Wānanga.
So far we have offered courses for beginners (He Karoro Inu ki Uta) and intermediate (He Matuku Moana ki Tai) learners, and we plan to add an advanced course in the near future.
In 2025 we are aiming to offer one 12-week He Karoro Inu ki Uta course and one 12-week He Matuku Moana ki Tai course, both in the second half of the year. Keep an eye on this page and our other communications for more details about these courses as they become available. Courses are open to a limited number of learners, so be sure to get in quick when they open for registrations.
